What is the History of Global Green Challenge?
The Global Green Challenge is an evolution of the historic and very successful World Solar Challenge that has been staged since 1987. In recent years the event has featured a demonstration of practical technology. The practical technologies aspect has come of age and will be presented as a competition with measurable results as an Eco Challenge for a range of low emission and alternative fuel supply vehicles.
Who are the stakeholders of the Global Green Challenge?
The Global Green Challenge is organised by the South Australian Motorsport Board and supported by the South Australian and Northern Territory Governments. Major sponsors are the South Australian Tourism Commission and Internode, one of Australia’s foremost Internet Service Providers.
What route does the Global Green Challenge take?
The event follows the Stuart Highway, the major north/south crossing of the vast and imposing Australian continent. While the Solarcars run their traditional single stage challenge across the continent, the Eco Challenge stages will accommodate the attention of regional centres such as Katherine, Tennant Creek, Alice Springs, Coober Pedy and Port Augusta.
What was the economic impact of the 2007 World Solar Challenge?
The economic impact of the 2007 World Solar Challenge has been assessed at approximately $10 million. We expect the 2009 event to far exceed this amount. The Global Green Challenge is a 'competitor intensive' type of event attracting approximately 1,000 participants made up of support crews and attending media and provide income, profile and opportunities for people and communities from Darwin to Adelaide.

As the event travels through some of the most isolated regions of the planet, the most practical way of following the event is online. During the event the website will receive continuous updates by satellite from the checkpoints and stages, to become the singe most comprehensive repository of information about all the participants.
What Media activity and coverage is planned for the 2009 Global Green Challenge?
Plans for the extensive and multi faceted media support are already being implemented.
Key elements include:
- Television newsfeeds via a dedicated crew and satellite dish on every day of the event.
- Pre-event television feed featuring entrants, scrutineering, colour, preparation, personalities
- The ability for all entrants/ manufacturers to gain material from the daily news feeds
- Daily reports supplied to radio networks
- Results, media releases, vision posted daily on the event web site
- A 60 minute documentary on the event for national and international distribution
- ‘Colour’ segments/articles on cars entered with manufacturers encouraged to engage personalities or media members to participate in the event.
